to several firehouses and conducted interviews with firefighters to find
out about them, their jobs and what they look for in off duty clothing.
From the interviews we not only got valuable information about how the
look and feel of our t-shirts should be it's also how we got our company
name. On our firehouse visits we noticed that fire service professionals
have many traits (such as loyalty, bravery, leadership, and strong sense
of pride) that are very similar to those of the astrological sign LEO
which also happens to be a fire sign. We launched our first design at FDIC
and surveyed the people who had received the shirt there. We took their
feedback and also let their votes choose the second design we released.

I hate to change the site again when you probably just got used
to it again, but my intentions were to never come back to the blog.
Thanks to the Turkish Hacker, I lost my entire site.

Since the demise of my last site, I have been working with a great company
for about 6 months to build a new safer site. The reason for doing
a new site is that I want to stay ahead of the curve. I was the first ever to do a video based fire blog, and now I am a part of the many. We are consistantly posting the same stories and videos on a daily basis.

I found it in my collection while digging through my archives looking for parts of another video that I am putting together. We have a heavily involved wood frame with heavy smoke showing. This video captures a lightweight construction structural failure as a result of a fire load.

Simply put, when something is built with a series of trusses they are highly dependant on each other. As soon as one fails, the probability for the entire frame to fail increases. As shown in the video you typically end up with more of a catastrophic structural failure as well. Also remember to monitor your operational time carefully, and try to estimate how long this fire has been burning. You may have plenty of air in your bottle, but you may have far less time to operate before the framing fails.

"Units responded to a large unoccupied 4 story condo complex. Fire spread very rapidly causing a complete collapse of the building. Fire extended to 3 story condo units across the street causing major damage and collapse as well. Numerous parked cars were burned to the shell. There was radiant heat damage to many other buildings. From what I saw Mutual Aid units responded from Keyport, Union Beach, Hazlet, Middletown, Port Monmouth. Many other towns assisted as well. There was a large EMS response too. A Pipeline was established with drafting operations to bring adequate water to the scene. This relay was several blocks long. Crews did any excellent job on evacuating homes and protecting exposures from additional fire spread."

"A fire destroyed an apartment complex located at 100 Barton Street this morning in Bloomsburg. Neighbors say they saw the fire start in the first floor apartment around 10:30 AM and it spread rapidly throughout the building.

This is not the first time this building has had problems. One tenant recently fell through a rotted porch and suffered a severe head injury. Bloomsburg code enforcement had ordered the porch to be repaired and all the violations resolved after the incident. One code official said the smoke alarm system had just been installed and was inspected just days before the fire. However, it appears that the violations had nothing to do with the cause of the fire.

The Bloomsburg Fire chief said the cause of the fire, resulted from a man trying to unclog a drain in the first floor apartment bathtub, with gasoline. The man told officials he had poured gas down a bathtub drain and then accidentally spilled the pouring container, resulting in a fire from and unknown source. This clip is the raw/unedited video of a two-alarm commercial structure fire that I shot in the Mira Mar area of San Diego on August 19th, 2010. The company involved was Hi-Q Environmental Products Company at 7386 Trade Street, San Diego, CA 92121. There were flames through the roof upon SDFD's arrival. The fire damaged at least two businesses. I was unofficially told (well after the incident) that the source of the fire had to do with a Ford F150 that was parked inside the building.

HOMEWOOD, Ill. — Uncoordinated ventilation caused a flashover that killed one firefighter and injured another when both failed to recognize signs of rapidly deteriorating conditions, investigators found.

Insufficient staffing was also cited as a key contributing factor in the incident, as crews on scene were stretched thin according to a NIOSH report released Tuesday.

Rookie Homewood Fire Department Firefighter-Paramedic Brian Carey was killed of smoke inhalation on March 30 while assisting in search and rescue of a reported victim trapped in a house fire, the report said.

Responding to reports of a downed brother, firefighters conducting a search discovered Firefighter-Paramedic Carey entangled in a hoseline and not wearing his helmet or facepiece, and without a hood.

Firefighter-Paramedic Karra Kopas, who had entered the structure along with him, was injured in the fire and had to be rescued four feet from the front door where she said her gear melted to the living room carpet.

At the time of the flashover, firefighters performing ventilation were not coordinating with hoseline and search and rescue crews inside the house, according to the investigation...READ FULL ARTICLE

Box 2254 was transmitted at 22:55 hours for a house fire at 539 Pratt Street in center city. Engine companies 4, 9, 6, Truck 2 and Battalion 4 (Grim) respond.

BN 4 arrives and has smoke from a vacant two-story duplex and transmits a "working fire". Engine 4 stretches two lines in from North Law Street. Crews force entry and quickly darken down a fire in the basement. Shortly afterwards, firefighters detect an odor of natural gas and PD evacuates the immediate area.

The fire is under investigation by the fire Marshall's office.

On Sunday July 9, 1995, The Spotswood Volunteer Fire Department responded to a working structure fire at 3 Cedar Brook Lane. The fire was determined to be caused by unattended cooking on the stove in the kitchen.

On the evening of January 3, 1994, the Spotswood Volunteer Fire Department responded to a working structure fire on 2 Snowhill St. (The current location of the Spotswood Diner strip mall), during a nasty storm of freezing rain and 30+ MPH winds that fanned and quickly spread the fire. The two story building with stores on the first floor and an apartment on the second floor ignited after a cigarette lit bedding in the apartment.

In recent weeks, there have been many videos uploaded to YouTube that show firefighters extinguishing fires in vacant structures. Fires in vacant buildings present the normal dangers found in occupied structures as well as additional dangers not often considered.

During operations at a vacant building fire, it is often possible to make an interior attack to increase the rate of extinguishment. However, we must always remember at such incidents that life hazard and the safety of the members involved is the ultimate priority.

FDNY Firefighting Procedures defines a vacant as, "a structure which is considered to be completely unoccupied and all efforts to maintain the building in a livable condition have been abandoned by the owner."

Certain departments across the country have specific ways of distinguishing or identifying vacant buildings. If your department does not have specific operation procedures for vacant buildings, you should consider developing some guidelines. The original description hails PG County Station 26 and 8 as the initial firefighters making the attack on this single story wood frame ranch, but it appears as though the well known KENTLAND 33 was on scene:

"Around midnight, the box alarm was transmitted for the house on fire in the 4600 block of Davis Avenue in Boulevard Heights, Maryland. This assignment brought Truck Company and Chief 33 with seven volunteers. Duty Chief 800 was the first fire department unit to arrive and reported fire showing "from pretty much everywhere". Rescue Squad 27, Truck Company 37 and Engine Companies 26 and 8 arrived next and went to work. Chief 33 arrived seconds later and was assigned to work with the crews on division one. Two hand lines were positioned on side "A" and an aggressive, coordinated attack was carried out to quickly extinguish the fire. Truck Company 33 arrived as this was being carried out and assumed the Rapid Intervention duties. The crew placed portable ladders, assured egress points and developed a rescue plan for the home. Volunteers from Kentland operated for approx. 35 minutes before the incident was scaled back."
